Metrolinx is the Province of Ontario’s transportation agency for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton area (GTHA). It was created to improve the coordination and integration of all modes of transportation in the GTHA. Metrolinx’s mission is to champion, develop and implement an integrated transportation system that enhances prosperity, sustainability and quality of life.

In September of 2008, Metrolinx launched a regional transportation plan named The Big Move – that will transform the GTHA for decades to come. Viewed as the most ambitious long-term transportation plan in North America, The Big Move is expected to deliver thousands of green and well-paid jobs. It will also save billions of dollars in time, energy and other efficiencies.

The Big Move will deliver tangible results in the way the province plans and operates the transportation system. The Big Move is designed to restore mobility and prosperity to our region.

Through The Big Move, Metrolinx is proposing new transportation projects that amount to two billion dollars annually over the next 25 years — the largest public transit expansion in half a century. Over its life span, this investment will help create thousands of new green and well-paid jobs, and save billions of dollars in time, energy and other efficiencies.

Metrolinx plans to build more than 1,200 kilometres of rapid transit — triple what exists now. The goal is for 80 per cent of residents in the region to be living within two kilometres of rapid transit. This is particularly important for seniors and low-income populations who rely on transit.

The Big Move is about values as much as it is about vehicles. With more than 100 priority actions and supporting policies, its benefits will be widespread. Average commute times will decrease, despite an expected 50 per cent increase in population. More residents will be able to access jobs that were once inconvenient to reach by transit, while integrated transit fares and new information systems will help all of us make smarter choices.

The Big Move will also help to revitalize communities. More than 7,000 kilometres of new lanes, trails and pathways for pedestrians and cyclists will help make walking and cycling safer.
