Laird Station East Headwall Construction for Twin Tunnels Stages One & Two – Reminder
The Eglinton Crosstown is a 19-kilometre light rail transit line that will run along Eglinton Avenue through the heart of Toronto, with an underground central section. The line will connect Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east, and the new service will be up to 60% faster than the bus service today.
What work is starting?
What: Crews will be constructing the east headwall for the future Laird Station in advance of the twin tunnel construction. Headwalls are underground support walls located at the east and west ends of the future station location.
Why: These station headwalls are required to be in place prior to the arrival of tunnel boring machines at each of the station locations along the Eglinton Crosstown route. As a terminus station, Laird Station will include special track sections requiring an elongated underground section.
Where: The work zone will extend approximately from just east of Brentcliffe Road to west of Don Avon Drive along Eglinton Avenue East. Construction will take place in two stages. The work zone will be located on the north side of Eglinton Avenue East during stage one and shift to the south side of Eglinton Avenue East during stage two. Concrete barriers with chain link fence will be used to separate the work zone from traffic.
When: Head wall construction will start as early as the week of July 7, 2014 until late Summer 2014.
During the first stage of work, crews will occupy the north side of Eglinton Avenue East for several weeks in the area east of Brentcliffe Road to west of Don Avon Drive to construct the northeast headwall of Laird Station.
Following this construction, crews will shift and occupy the south side of Eglinton Avenue East for another several weeks in the area east of Brentcliffe Road west of Don Avon Drive to construct the southeast headwall of Laird Station.
Some work may be rescheduled or adjusted due to weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances.
Traffic Details
During stage one, for north headwall construction, traffic will be shifted to the south side of Eglinton Avenue East. Traffic will be gradually reduced to one lane in each direction from just east of Brentcliffe Road to west of Don Avon Drive.
During stage two, for south headwall construction, traffic will be shifted to the north side of Eglinton Avenue East. Traffic will be gradually reduced to one lane in each direction from just east of Brentcliffe Road to west of Don Avon Drive.
On-street parking will be restricted along the north and south of Eglinton Avenue East in this construction zone. Bus lanes will be accommodated where possible. Please take care when travelling near construction areas.
Pedestrian Walkways
During construction, the north and south Eglinton sidewalk will remain open. Pedestrians will be directed around the site on a temporary sidewalk, separated from the construction site by concrete barriers with chain link fence. Please take care when travelling near construction areas. Please watch for additional signs directing pedestrians.
Public Transit
Both eastbound and westbound TTC bus stops in the affected area may be relocated for the safety of transit riders. Please watch for posted signs indicating the adjusted locations.
Waste Collection
Solid Waste Management Services will continue to pick up your waste during construction of the Crosstown. Recycling and garbage collection schedules along Eglinton Avenue will not change during the construction period. Please continue to abide by their guidelines for your garbage disposal and follow your normal routine. Please label your bins with your address and place them as close to the usual location as possible before 7 a.m. or the night before the scheduled collection day. If necessary, during construction, your bins may be temporarily moved by the contractor.
Work Hours
The hours of work as permitted by the by-law for this contract are between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m., 7 days a week, when required. The contractor will not always work during the extended hours, but may do so at its discretion.
