Mining operations at the Avenue Station Secondary Entrance continue.
Mining occurs on a 24hr schedule. 

  • This week, crews are finishing the installation of the support arch – or “umbrella” – for the excavated area that will connect the Secondary Entrances site with the completed TBM tunnels. These activities have relatively low noise and vibration levels.
  • Beginning as early as Monday November 27, crews will start excavation. 
  • The first step of excavation is to break through the 1m thick concrete pile wall of the Secondary Entrance. This involves jackhammering to break through the concrete. Breaking the concrete pile wall takes approximately 2-3 days. Nearby residents can expect noise and vibration from this activity.
  • Following the breaking of the pile wall, more concrete chipping is required as excavation continues under Eglinton. Nearby residents and businesses can expect noise and vibration from this activity as well.



Construction activities outside the long-term set up continue to be active, and will for the coming months. Residents and businesses can expect to see the following daytime and nighttime work at various locations in the roadway or on the sidewalks between Braemar and Lascelles.


Gantry Crane Installation – 24hr schedule 

  • This week, as early as Wednesday November 22, crews will begin the installation of the Gantry Crane at the Secondary Entrance.
  • To deliver the beams that the crane will sit on, the trucks carrying the beams will back into the construction site from the west end of the enclosure.
  • It takes approximately 5 – 10 minutes for each truck to back into the site. There will be approximately 6 beam deliveries.  Temporary short term disruption to traffic on Eglinton as the trucks complete the maneuver should be expected. Once inside the site, the beams will be in the enclosure.

Dewatering Work - Daytime Work  

  • The dewatering system will help remove ground water from the station area to help ensure stability as we complete mining operations underground.
  • Daytime dewatering installations will continue periodically until February 2018. Expect to see installations between Oriole Parkway and Lascelles and west of Avenue Road.

Monitoring Instruments (installations, surveying and monitoring) - Daytime Work  

  • Monitoring instruments give information about soil conditions during construction operations. This is an ongoing program; instruments will be continuously checked throughout mining operations.
  • Monitors continue to be installed around the station area; installation locations are in the centre of Eglinton and on the sidewalks between Braemar and Lascelles.
  • Already installed monitors will continue to be checked frequently throughout construction.



Sewer Lining Work – 24hr schedule 

  • Sewer lining work may begin as early as November 23, 2017.
  • Sewer lining work uses a resin that contains styrene to cure the liner to the inside of the sewer pipe. When heated during the curing process, the resin has a very distinct chemical smell – it is not harmful.

  • Eglinton will be down to one lane in each direction east of Avenue Road around the sewer lining work zone. There are some parking reductions on the south side of Eglinton between Highbourne and Oriole Parkway.
  • While sewer lining work is underway, there will be a few overnight periods (8:00 PM to 6:00 AM) when the work zone will extend west toward Avenue Road. Some parking spaces on the north side of Eglinton will be impacted during the nightly work zone extensions.
  • Short duration temporary lane closures will be required at other manholes as crews pull the lining through each sewer section.

Tunnel Backfilling Operations  

  • Tunnel connection bore hole drilling at Highbourne & Eglinton is complete.
  • Concrete pouring operations will begin following sewer lining work.
  • Why backfill portions of the tunnels? The tunnel backfilling “plugs” the tunnels on either side of the area to be excavated. This protects the tunnels and the operation by ensuring the work is localized to the small section. 



  • Watermain lining is required in the vicinity of Avenue Station area. Details coming soon.
