What Work is Taking Place?

  • In 2018, construction of an upgraded emergency ventilation system for the TTC Line 1 Subway system will get underway.
  • The new ventilation system will be located on the TTC corridor south of Berwick used for the TTC Line 1 Subway System. Housed in a concrete structure (pictured below), the new ventilation system will include smoke extraction for emergency situations at Eglinton station. Fans will be equipped with acoustic dampers to reduce noise, and, outside of emergency situations, will only run for testing purposes.
Tree removal Berwick Ave
  • In preparation for construction of the upgraded ventilation system, removal of approximately 25 trees on City property adjacent the TTC subway tracks, south of Berwick Avenue, is scheduled for October 28th, 2017.
  • All efforts have been made to minimize the number of trees impacted. A replacement strategy of at least 2:1 is in place for any trees removed during construction.
  • Tree removals will begin as early as October 28, 2017 and will occur during regular working hours (7am – 11pm). Work may be delayed due to weather conditions or unforeseen circumstances.

What to Expect

  • Residents and businesses near construction sites should anticipate noise from excavators, bobcats, and other construction equipment caused by tree removal and removal of debris.
